The
Akhal Teke in America

Currently,
the Akhal-Teke is rare by modern breed standards, with less
than 2,000 existing worldwide. The major population
of about 1,400 is in Russia, with the second largest group
in Turkmenistan. Here in the United States there are
fewer than 200 Akhal-Teke purebreds.
The
Akhal-Teke Association of America was incorporated in 1983
to preserve, promote, and protect the breed and oversee two
registries: The Akhal-Teke Registry of America for purebreds
and the Akhal-Teke Sporthorse Registry of America for crosses
of one-half or better Akhal-Teke blood. The sporthorse
registry is not for the creation of a new breed, but to record
the birth, lineage and achievements of sporthorses whose breeders
have utilized the Akhal-Teke gene pool in their programs.
As
their numbers in the United States increase, we believe the
Akhal-Teke will distinguish itself as an elegant all purpose
athlete and, with its linebred prepotency, make a major
contribution to American sporthorses through crossbreeding for
performance.
